weekly report
Vikings A had the closest victory in Round two of the Aubrey Hughes Handicap Shield competition, beating Haddenham A, who had a 100 start, by a mere 4 points. The Vikings team of Julian Lawton Smith, Eamonn Deeley and James Lovelock managed a steady performance, restricting the scores of Haddenham's Mark Penn and Chris Hawkes to acceptable levels, but Haddenham's Mark Scott refused to go quietly. Continuing his tremendous league form, Scott shared the points with Lovelock, then beat Deeley and Lawton Smith to put his side firmly in the driving seat. For the final singles, Vikings needed a miracle to get back on terms and this was duly provided by Deeley, who beat Penn 21-7, 21-1. Haddenham, however, were far from finished and Penn looked for revenge in the doubles with Scott and they stunned Vikings by winning 21-13 in the 1st, but Vikings dug in for one last push and won 21-17 in the 2nd for a remarkable win.
The Vikings D team of Geraint Lloyd, Aki Ben-Ezra and John Tremayne enjoyed the next closest win, by just 5 points. They feared the worst, having to give a 200 point start to Forum L, and Dave Berkon, Stephen Oster and Jonathan Stuart put up a spirited show, with Berkon taking the 1st game against Ben-Ezra, but Vikings stuck to the task and kept to their schedule till the end.
Bicester A had to give Forum I a 225 start, but they kept up the pressure and won by 17 points.
Gladiators A had to make up 200 points against Forum H, but managed that with 43 points to spare.
Vikings B overturned a 200 deficit to win their encounter with Forum G by 55 points.
Vikings C beat Bicester C, plus 160 start, by 59 points. John Chalcroft was in good form for Bicester, even narrowly beating John Birkin in one of his games.
Forum J used their 170 point start well and tore into their club-mates Forum D. Once the dust had settled Forum J finished 102 points ahead.
The biggest win of the round went to Vikings H. They had 180 points start against Forum C, and with that they were far too strong, running out winners by 129 points.
